Oil on canvas: 100 x 70 cm. Auctioned at Christie’s New York, November 2016 (unsold). Auctioned at Bukowskis Stockholm, June 2017. Price tag: SEK 18.575.000 (ca. € 1.825.000). Dated 1903, but executed in 1901. Said to be Strindberg’s favourite painting. Between 1894 and 1896 Strindberg suffered a series of psychotic attacks. He referred to these turbulent days as the ‘Forty-day inferno’ and he named this work his ‘Inferno painting’.
