Salomon de Bray. Jael, Deborah and Barak, 1635 (Catharijneconvent, Utrecht).



Oil on wood: 86.5 x 71.5 cm. Restored in 2011 (Caroline van der Elst). Dated on hammerhead. The panel might originally have been a pendant with 'Judith offering the Head of Holophernes' at the Prado.

John Singer Sargent. Miss Beatrice Townsend, 1882 (National Gallery of Art, Washington).


Oil on canvas: 79.4 x 58.4 cm. Born to John Joseph Townsend and his wife Catherine Rebecca Bronson, friends of John Singer Sargent’s. Only two years after this painting was completed Beatrice died of peritonitis at age fourteen.
