Matthias Weischer. TV Tower (‘Fernsehturm’), 2004 (private collection).

Mixed media on canvas: 200 x 290 cm(!). Auctioned at Christie’s London, June 2013. Matthias Weischer (2015): “I was working for a while on the interiors that had these psychological moments - you have this clear space and all the objects standing around, and you could derive a meaning from them, or not. There were strong connotations to the objects. I was playing for a long time with these possibilities of the interior and these relationships of the objects to each other”.

Ruprecht von Kaufmann. You never know, 2019 (artist’s portfolio).

Oil on linoleum on wood: 122.5 x 153 cm. Ruprecht von Kaufmann (2021): “Composition is probably the key. I am obsessed with compositions, they are the backbone of every painting and offer so many possibilities to influence the emotional expression of a painting. It’s possible to counter very extreme imagery with a very orderly composition or vice versa. I am always envious of film-directors, because they have a timeline, music and sound available to them. So to me it’s important to introduce a sense of a before or after into the painting. A strong sense that something must have led up to the depicted moment and that something will happen afterwards”.

Manuel Mathieu. Levitation, 2018 (private collection).

Acrylic and oil sticks on canvas: 203.2 x 177.8 cm. Manuel Mathieu (2020): “For me, it started inward the movement, in the sense that I had to understand how generous I had to be with myself in order to keep going. Because a lot of the act of making art is giving to the world whatever you have. When I leave, I will be measured by what I gave, and not what I’ve taken. The act of sharing is an act of generosity in itself. That is not even part of my discussion”.

Susannah Martin. Reservoir, 2018 (private collection).

Oil on linen: 50 x 50 cm. Susannah Martin (2019): “The human body as subject matter is always political. There is no way around that. The nude figure is probably the most confrontational subject that an artist can take on. Whether a viewer is open to it or rejects it, the human subject leaves no one cold. We all have intense feelings when looking at our fellow human beings. How we react to an image of the human body has to do with our most intimate personal fears and desires as well as social conditioning and expectations”.

Teodora Axente. In Secrecy, 2013 (private collection).

Oil on canvas: 74 x 63 cm. Teodora Axente (2021): “I present an unexpected series of materials through which I evoke the amalgam of matter that has mastered my characters. They become dependent on the matter that will dominate them and that seeks to shape them from within. The presence of aluminum foil, plastic bags, satin, velvet, pearls or furs evokes that state of mystery in some places with noble aspects, which fascinates the eye at first sight, but also becomes contrasting through the strangeness of association of the chosen objects and materials”.
