Susannah Martin. Reservoir, 2018 (private collection).

Oil on linen: 50 x 50 cm. Susannah Martin (2019): “The human body as subject matter is always political. There is no way around that. The nude figure is probably the most confrontational subject that an artist can take on. Whether a viewer is open to it or rejects it, the human subject leaves no one cold. We all have intense feelings when looking at our fellow human beings. How we react to an image of the human body has to do with our most intimate personal fears and desires as well as social conditioning and expectations”.

Teodora Axente. In Secrecy, 2013 (private collection).

Oil on canvas: 74 x 63 cm. Teodora Axente (2021): “I present an unexpected series of materials through which I evoke the amalgam of matter that has mastered my characters. They become dependent on the matter that will dominate them and that seeks to shape them from within. The presence of aluminum foil, plastic bags, satin, velvet, pearls or furs evokes that state of mystery in some places with noble aspects, which fascinates the eye at first sight, but also becomes contrasting through the strangeness of association of the chosen objects and materials”.
