Edvard Munch. The Sun (‘Solen’), 1916 (Oslo University Assembly Hall).

Oil on canvas: ca. 449 x 786 cm(!). One of the 11 oil paintings that cover the walls of the University Aula. The new assembly hall was built for the University's centennial in 1911. With its enormous walls and skylights, the hall was designed for artistic decoration. Not until 1914 (after competitions with: Eilif Peterssen, Gerhard Munthe and Emanuel Vigeland), was Munch commissioned to decorate the hall. In 1916 the University received the 11 paintings. ‘The Sun’ is the central element in Munch’s painting cycle: “…distinctively Norwegian and universally human”.
